Schools and Environment

WaCC conducts National Tree Day events. In 2024 WaCC organised a planting day for the general community in Spine St Park Sumner. They can be for the general community or organised with a particular school for Schools National Tree Day. In 2022 WaCC held in Phil Denman Park, Jamboree Heights. WaCC liaised with Cr Hutton and the Brisbane City Council’s Community Conservation Partnership Program’s Catchment Officer.

The idea of the planting event originated with a school parent who then contacted Cr Hutton and WaCC’s President, Lenore (second left in the below photo). Cr Hutton coordinated with Jamboree Heights Primary School and Jamboree Community Kindy and provided support for a planting event. The school and kindy kids had a great excursion into the nearby Phil Denman Park and planted a total of 250 native species, some grasses and some trees shown in the photo above. All the children were a great team working together and they kept their mind on the job at hand. Older children were paired with the younger kindy kids, and they showed enormous patience and kindness in assisting them with the planting.

Where and when possible, Brett obtains a permit to allow him to bring along a frog or a cane toad. Brett likes to educate school children and the public at our other events so they can like frogs and learn to distinguish brown frogs from cane toads. There are brown coloured frogs that may look like a toad, so it is important to know the difference. Apparently, it is all in the eyes.
